Hedgerows – Management & Conservation

Megan Gimber provided us with an insight into hedgerow lifecycles, all the benefits they provide for wildlife and the key to revitalising any dwindling hedges.

Discussion after the webinar included how to pay for hedge laying and the practicalities of doing so with double stock fencing. What species are best for gapping up and that tractor flails when used with the right hedge management plan are an important tool to maintain healthy hedges!

Species suggested for gapping up a hedge in the weald included: Guelder rose, spindle, blackthorn, and for hedgerow trees: Chequers trees, a resistant elm, oak, field maple, crab apple and wild pear.
